If you have a website, chances are you’ve started hearing about SSL or security certificates, even more so since October 2017. So what are they, why do you need one, and what’s the urgency?

What is a SSL certificate?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. We won’t bore you with the technical jargon, but it is basically a security feature that encrypts your sensitive data and protects information such as logins, passwords and credit card details.

Just like locking the doors of your house or car, a SSL certificate protects your website valuables and minimises the chance of spying, intercepting or hacking of your sensitive information.

Why do I need one?

Since October 2017, Google and other browsers now clearly alert users if they are on a secure or insecure website.

Websites without SSL certificates are penalised and will drop down rank in Google search results.

So in a nutshell, a SSL certificate:

  • Protects sensitive information on your website.
  • Tells users your business is trustworthy.
  • Improves your search engine ranking.
  • Provides peace of mind for both you and your customers.
How will SSL change my website?

You and your site users won’t notice any difference to your website, other than the URL starting with https, rather than http. For example: https://reveler.com.au/. Your site will also display a green padlock and ‘secure’ icon, to tell users your site is trustworthy.

What if I don’t get one?

At the end of the day, you don’t have to add a SSL certificate to your website. However, the small investment is worth it compared to the potential damage caused by not having one.

Even if your site doesn’t get corrupted, think about the brand damage it can do. You’re basically telling customers your business can’t be trusted.

Once your SSL certificate is installed, what’s next?

For total peace of mind once your security certificate is place, we recommend an ongoing website maintenance plan. This protects your investment and ensures your site continues to function safely and effectively with ongoing support when you need it.

At Reveler, our website maintenance plan includes:

  • 24-hour security monitoring.
  • Email support.
  • Daily, off-site backups.
  • Regular updates with the latest software and security.
  • Monitoring and removal of potential viruses and threats.
